Creative Commons

With Creative Commons (CC) licenses, creators can relinquish some of their rights as copyright holders.  Creators can retain some rights (like attribution), but are often happy to have their work used or remixed so that other creators may benefit.  For all creative commons licenses, please read and follow the license requirements.

Below are some tools to locate Creative Commons images:

Public Domain

Public Domain images are those in which copyright has expired, or where the copyright owner has given very broad permissions to people to use it freely. The copyright term is 95 years from the year of first publication or 120 years from creation, whichever comes first.  After this time, works become part of the public domain.

Should you choose to properly search another way, it is an in-depth process to cite. Step by step directions are in this slideshow and you must properly search and cite the images.
